Play time. Wet pot

side/footimg_0162I was sitting outside minding my own business when I got the idea to throw this pot start to finish, and deco it.  So I went in and threw a ring, about a pound of clay. I then threw a flat disk for the top and placed it down on the foot.  (I wanted a tall foot).  I ribbed it a bit on the banding wheel and smacked some slip on it and drew the rat.  Done.  Oh, and two quick handles.

Play time like this can be great for idea generation.

I think I'll do a video on it next time, so stay tuned.

Wet Deco

wet goat decoI had a couple boards of plates to slip today.  On this last plate I decided to go for broke and do the slipping and deco all in one fell swoop.  A bit much maybe, but it's good to push things.  It doesn't get much more immediate than this, although I could have slipped it and deco'd right after it was thrown and still on the wheel.  Humm, well there are more plates to make so that could happen.

I find that it's asking a lot of my poor ol pottery brain to be able to do things like this.  It's easier to do one step at a time and to be able to sit down with 12 or so plates to decorate all at one time after they've all been slipped and sat for a while.  Maybe a day or two.  Is it worth it to push, to try and be sp0ntaneous and fresh, in the moment like this with each pot?  I'm not so sure.  Being prepared with the image in mind, or at least a starting point is very important.  There is something about the wet slip that cannot be recaptured at a later state.

So, more to think about.  More pots to make.

Jars

jar and lids

Yesterday I made two bigger jars and then this morning one more.  I wanted a few of these for the upcoming Circle of Eight Show, which is April 19th.

two jarsLater today I am off for the opening of the Spring Sale at Clayworks in Charlotte.  I've got a good selection of pots that will be there tonight and tomorrow.

naked bulbI put this bulb above my wheel a while back.  I've always wanted one of these.  Ha.

Got these cups handled today and the yunomis footed.  Also made a couple bigger jars.

Roughs.

The Cleveland County Arts Council has it's annual fund drive c0ming up soon.  I've been working on some rough ideas for the marketing piece.  I don't know if they will use these but it's been fun to play around with my drawings, adding some color on the computer.  This first one doesn't have the text inserted yet and I'd probably do something other than that pink at the bottom.

dogMonica has mentioned a Wacom tablet to me a couple times.  I can see how having one would be really fun.

Well now it's time to go make some pots!

Good Morning.

Just a few shots from my morning.  I'm getting back to making some pots today.  I couldn't get to sleep easily last night, too many thoughts running around in my head.  I keep a pen and pad in the bedside table drawer and I had to get it out twice last night to jot down ideas.  I keep a flashlight there too so I don't wake Sarah.

Trying some color in my sketchbook.  Just for fun.  I made that cup a year or so at Clayworks. And it looks like it's going to be another beautiful day.  Have a great Tuesday.

Thanks.

Today was a better day all around as far as my Sale went  .  The weather was sunny and breezy unlike yesterday which was gray and soggy.  Many more folks came out to visit and buy pots.   Thanks to you all!  I still have a good inventory though and I'll take some nice pots to the Clayworks Spring Sale this coming weekend.

Jen Mecca and Allison McGowan came out together.  It was good to have a little visit with them and I think they were my lucky charms b/c after they got here a steady stream of people began to arrive.

Jenn and Allison

Vicki Gill came by too with her new pup Cherokee.  Vicki and I talked about the great showthat's up at Akar now.

VickiLooks like we are going to have a couple days of sunshine before the rain returns on Wednesday.  I'm planning on working outside tomorrow and probably not making any pots till the middle of the week.  Check back soon to see what's happening.

Spring Sale. Day 2.

jarYesterday was very, very rainy and dreary.  Several die hard customers came out but it was pretty slow going most of the day.  Thanks to you all who braved the weather.

This morning the sun is shining so I'm hoping to have a good day.  I know some of my pottery pals are going to visit and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

There's plenty of pots of here, really nice ones, so if you're in the area please come on out.

I'll be unloading the kiln again early tomorrow with a few last minute additons to the shelves.  I'm pretty stoked with all the new pots.

Color. Fun.

watercolor

The Arts Council is having a postcard show later in the year.  I'm supposed to submit 2 entries.  They were due a couple weeks ago, but I got an extension.  Now I have to get them finished by tomorrow.  So I'm teaching myself how to watercolor tonight! Ha!

Think this sort of thing would help with my pots?  Duh.

Shift. Just a bit More

Thanks all who left comments on the Shift posts.  It was great esp. to hear from folks who haven't commented before.

I don't think 'Serious' is the correct word for the potters I mentioned that I always aspired to be like.  Of course you all are correct, I am a serious potter, silly sometimes, but serious in what I'm doing.  So thanks for that.

What else?  Well, I'm feeling re-energized after unloading that kiln yesterday.  New information to process and confirmation that I am doing some things right.

Nothing more at the moment.  Off to do some drawing.  Maybe some longhorn cattle.
